Commuting to DC From Fredericksburg, Stafford & Spotsylvania: VRE vs. the I-95 Express Lanes
Quick answer: The two main ways to commute from Fredericksburg, Stafford or Spotsylvania to Washington, DC are the VRE Fredericksburg Line and the I-95 Express Lanes. VRE runs weekdays only, and the first train leaving Spotsylvania at 4:52 a.m. is scheduled into Union Station at 6:30 a.m. (VRE schedule). The Express Lanes now reach Route 17 in Stafford (VDOT).
Buyers moving here ask me about this constantly, and sellers want to describe their location accurately. Here is a sourced comparison, plus what changes this month.
Heads-up: Union Station is closed to Virginia trains Oct. 16–26, 2026
Amtrak's "Pause for Progress" project replaces track at A-Interlocking in the First Street Tunnel, the control point that routes every Amtrak and VRE train between Union Station and Virginia. The outage runs from after service on Friday, Oct. 16 until Monday morning, Oct. 26 (Amtrak). For Oct. 19–23, VRE is running a modified schedule with no trains to or from Union Station: morning Fredericksburg Line trains end at L'Enfant, and Train 314 ends at Alexandria with a Metro transfer (VRE outage schedule). If you work near Union Station, plan your last leg from L'Enfant that week.

The four VRE stations in our area
All four local stations offer free surface parking and ticket machines that accept only credit or debit cards (VRE stations):
- Spotsylvania station, on Crossroads Parkway in Spotsylvania County, is the southern end of the line and has a head house with restrooms (VRE).
- Fredericksburg station sits on Princess Anne Street in downtown Fredericksburg, with an elevator, bike racks and local transit connections (VRE).
- Leeland Road station is on Leeland Road in Falmouth, in Stafford County (VRE).
- Brooke station is on Brooke Road in Stafford (VRE).
If your job is at Marine Corps Base Quantico, note that VRE tells riders to use the base Main Gate on Fuller Road, to allow extra time, and to expect possible random ID checks (VRE).
What the VRE schedule actually looks like
Under the schedule effective May 4, 2026, eight northbound trains leave Spotsylvania between 4:52 a.m. and 7:46 a.m. (VRE schedule). Six of them continue to Union Station. Trains 312 and 314 end at Alexandria, where riders can switch to Metro at King Street (VRE schedule).
On the first train (Train 300), the scheduled ride to Union Station's 6:30 a.m. arrival is 1 hour 38 minutes from Spotsylvania (4:52 a.m.), 1 hour 27 minutes from Fredericksburg (5:03 a.m.) and 1 hour 14 minutes from Brooke (5:16 a.m.) (VRE schedule).
Going home, the latest scheduled train leaves Union Station at 6:50 p.m. and reaches Spotsylvania at 8:37 p.m. (VRE schedule). VRE does not run on federal holidays such as Veterans Day, Thanksgiving and the day after Thanksgiving, and it runs a reduced "S" schedule on days like Christmas Eve (VRE schedules).
The I-95 Express Lanes now reach Stafford's Route 17
The Fredericksburg Extension added about 10 miles of reversible Express Lanes, from south of Route 610 (Garrisonville Road) to near Route 17 at Exit 133. The lanes opened Aug. 17, 2023, and all new access points opened Dec. 7, 2023 (VDOT). Access points include Route 17, Courthouse Road (Route 630) and the area near Russell Road at Quantico (VDOT).
Drivers entering I-95 northbound from Route 3 or Route 17 can pick up the northbound Express Lanes at their southern end (VDOT news release). After the extension opened, the operator reported that evening rush-hour drivers saved about 35 minutes on average from DC to Fredericksburg in the Express Lanes, as of November 2023 (VDOT news release). That is an average reported by the operator, not a promise for your trip.
HOV-3, slugging and the E-ZPass Flex
The Express Lanes are free for vehicles carrying 3 or more people when an E-ZPass Flex is switched to HOV ON before you enter. A standard E-ZPass can't do this (Express Lanes FAQ). The operator mentions slugging, carpools and vanpools as ways to reach that headcount. It also warns that Virginia State Police can issue tickets of up to $1,000 for claiming HOV without 3 people (Learn the Lanes).
How to fit the commute into your home search
- Do a test run at your real hours, both directions, before you write an offer. Check VRE's alerts that day, because service changes happen.
- Measure the drive to the station or ramp, not only to I-95. Getting to Brooke or Leeland Road is a different drive from getting to the Route 17 ramps.
- Compare the areas side by side. My Fredericksburg, Stafford and Spotsylvania pages show current homes for sale and the local roads.
Sellers: describe your commute with facts
Name the nearest VRE station and the I-95 interchange you use, and let buyers judge the drive. Skip drive-time promises and never describe who a home "suits." That keeps your listing accurate and fair-housing compliant. To see how location factors into your price, start with a free home evaluation or read about how I sell homes.
