Stafford to Marine Corps Base Quantico: Commute Routes and Gate Tips

by Ron Chronister

Quick answer: From Stafford, the two main drives to Marine Corps Base Quantico are I-95 to Exit 148 and the Russell Road Gate, open daily 5 a.m. to 9 p.m., or Route 1 to the Fuller Road Gate, open 24/7 (MCB Quantico). VRE's Fredericksburg Line also stops at Quantico. Every adult in the car needs credentials or a visitor pass.

If you're looking at homes in Stafford County and your workday starts at Quantico, the gate you use and the hours it's open shape the drive as much as the miles do. Here's what the base, VDOT and VRE publish, so you can test real routes before you choose a home.

Quantico's gates and their hours

The base lists these gate hours (MCB Quantico):

  • Fuller Road Gate: open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. VRE calls it the Main Gate (VRE).
  • Russell Road Gate: open daily from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. (MCB Quantico).
  • Ponderosa Gate and Onville Gate: each open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week (MCB Quantico).
  • MDIA/RKB Gate: open 24/7 but restricted to authorized personnel (MCB Quantico).
  • Hospital Point Gate: until further notice, open 5 a.m. to 6 p.m., seven days a week, including holidays (MCB Quantico).

The base notes that gate hours and access procedures can change with operational needs, security conditions or special events (MCB Quantico). Check before a first trip and after any advisory.

Driving I-95 to Exit 148 and Russell Road

The base's own directions to the Visitor Control Center use I-95 Exit 148 toward Marine Corps Base Quantico, then Russell Road (MCB Quantico VCC). From most of Stafford, that means getting onto I-95 at Route 610 (Garrisonville Road), Route 630 (Courthouse Road) or Route 17 and heading north.

The 95 Express Lanes are an option on this stretch. VDOT says the Fredericksburg Extension added about 10 miles of reversible lanes, from south of Route 610 to the vicinity of Route 17 (Exit 133), with access at the Route 17 and Courthouse Road interchanges and near the Russell Road interchange at Quantico (VDOT). Because the lanes are reversible, check which direction they're open before you count on them for the trip home. You'll need an E-ZPass or E-ZPass Flex to use them (Express Lanes).

Driving Route 1 to the Fuller Road Gate

Route 1 runs through Stafford alongside I-95, past Aquia, and it's the other main way to reach the base. The Fuller Road Gate connects to US Route 1, according to the base's directions from that gate (MCB Quantico VCC). Unlike the Russell Road Gate, which closes overnight, Fuller Road is open around the clock (MCB Quantico).

Route 1 is also the natural backup when I-95 backs up. Try both routes at your real commute hours before you decide which one fits a given house.

Taking VRE from Brooke or Leeland Road

Stafford has two VRE stations on the Fredericksburg Line: Brooke and Leeland Road, both in Zone 8 with free surface parking (VRE). Quantico Station is in Zone 6, serves the Fredericksburg Line only and has free parking (VRE).

VRE adds a special notice for this stop. Drivers headed to Quantico Station should use the Main Gate on Fuller Road and allow extra time for gate delays, and base police may run random ID checks on passengers getting off the train (VRE).

Trains run on weekdays, and VRE does not run on listed federal holidays such as Columbus Day and Veterans Day (VRE schedule). VRE has also posted a modified schedule for October 19 to 23, 2026, because Amtrak work temporarily removes access to Union Station (VRE schedule). For a deeper look at train versus Express Lanes trips, see my VRE vs. I-95 Express Lanes guide.

Getting through the gate: DBIDS, passes and REAL ID

The base says its Trusted Traveler program is suspended, so all visitors, meaning everyone in the vehicle except minors, must show access credentials or an access pass (MCB Quantico). Authorized visitors get passes at the Visitor Control Center on Russell Road (MCB Quantico VCC).

  • Visitor Control Center hours: Monday to Friday, 6 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Saturday, 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. It's closed Sundays and all federal holidays (MCB Quantico VCC).
  • DBIDS registration: everyone 18 and older who needs access must register, and pre-enrolling online helps avoid delays (MCB Quantico FAQ).
  • Already have a DBIDS card from another base? Take it to the Visitor Control Center to have Quantico permissions loaded (MCB Quantico FAQ).
  • REAL ID: compliant credentials display a star in the upper right corner (MCB Quantico FAQ).

Using this in your Stafford home search

  1. Drive it at your real hours. Test the morning trip to the gate you'll actually use, and the evening trip back.
  2. Match the gate to your schedule. If you'll come and go late at night, plan on a gate that never closes, such as Fuller Road, since Russell Road closes overnight.
  3. Check the train option. If VRE works for you, note how far each home is from Brooke or Leeland Road.
