King George to Fredericksburg via Route 3: A Commuter's Guide
Quick answer: From King George, Route 3 runs west through Stafford County into Fredericksburg and on to I-95 at Exit 130. The Navy's own directions use Route 3 for about 17 miles between Route 206 and the Blue and Gray Parkway split (NSF Dahlgren guide). Plan around current roadwork, use 511 for live traffic and consider ridesharing.
If you're looking at homes in King George and working in Fredericksburg, Route 3 is the road you'll know best. Here's how the drive is laid out, what's changing on it and the tools that make it easier, all from official sources.
How the Route 3 drive is laid out
The NSF Dahlgren installation guide gives the route in the eastbound direction. From I-95, take Exit 130A to Route 3 East toward downtown Fredericksburg, continue on Route 3 (the Blue and Gray Parkway) for about two miles, then bear right on Route 3 toward King George and continue 17 miles to Route 206 (Dahlgren Road) (NSF Dahlgren guide). A morning commute simply runs that in reverse.
Where you live along the corridor matters. A home near the Route 3 and Route 301 crossroads, one closer to the Stafford line and one out near Dahlgren each make for a very different daily drive. If your work is on the Dahlgren end instead, see my Dahlgren area guide.
Two ways into Fredericksburg: Kings Highway or the Blue and Gray Parkway
In Stafford's Ferry Farm area, VDOT's work notices list Route 3, Route 3 Business (Kings Highway) and the Blue and Gray Parkway as separate roads, along with a Route 3 flyover between Route 3 westbound and the Blue and Gray Parkway (VDOT travel alert). The Blue and Gray Parkway is the Route 3 path the Navy's directions use to and from I-95 (NSF Dahlgren guide), while Kings Highway leads to Chatham Bridge (Stafford County).
Stafford County is designing a sidewalk, crosswalk and shared-use path along Kings Highway and Chatham Heights Road to link Chatham Bridge and the Belmont-Ferry Farm Trail with the Chatham Heights neighborhood. The county's timeline shows construction in 2028 (Stafford County).
Changes coming at Route 3 and Route 301
VDOT is rebuilding the Route 3 and Route 301 intersection in King George as a median U-turn intersection. Once it's complete in 2027, left turns won't be allowed at the main intersection. Drivers who want to turn left will turn right first, then use U-turn areas in the Route 301 median, which will have traffic signals when the project opens (VDOT).
VDOT's project page estimates a fall 2026 start and a summer 2027 finish (VDOT). VDOT's August 2026 report to the King George Board of Supervisors listed the project for fall 2026 advertisement (King George County). If you use that intersection daily, expect work zones over the next year.
Changes coming at I-95 Exit 130
On the Fredericksburg end, VDOT plans to expand the I-95 northbound off-ramp at Exit 130 to three right-turn lanes onto Route 3 eastbound, controlled by a new traffic signal. If you head home on I-95 northbound, that's your ramp onto Route 3 east (VDOT).
The same project adds a park and ride lot with at least 15 spaces on Rowe Street near the Lawrence A. Davies Transit Center and extends the median on William Street. VDOT estimates a September 2027 start and 2029 completion (VDOT).
Roadwork this week and live traffic
VDOT's work list for Oct. 18-24 includes crews refreshing pavement markings on Route 3, Route 206 and Route 218 in King George, with alternating lane closures run by a flagging crew (King George County). The county's homepage links to this weekly list.
For live conditions, 511 Virginia shows traffic speeds, road conditions and cameras. Check it before you leave, especially on paving nights.
Carpools, vanpools and commuter lots
GWRideConnect is a free ridesharing service whose service area includes King George, Stafford, Spotsylvania, Caroline and Fredericksburg. It helps match commuters with carpools, vanpools and transit (GWRideConnect). Its commuter lot list includes a King George lot at the Visitor's Center on Route 301 (GWRideConnect).
GWRideConnect notes that overnight parking is allowed at the lots, but vehicles left more than 10 consecutive days will be towed (GWRideConnect). If you'll continue north by train, my Fredericksburg to DC commute guide compares VRE with the I-95 Express Lanes.
