How to Read Virginia School Quality Profiles for Fredericksburg-Area Schools
Quick answer: Virginia's School Quality Profiles are the state's free online report cards for every public school and division, run by the Virginia Department of Education. Search a school or division, then read the Summary for accreditation and performance category, and use the other tabs for test results, enrollment, readiness and staffing. Confirm the assigned school with the division before you buy.
Buyers moving to the Fredericksburg area often ask me about schools. I don't rank schools, and I won't tell anyone which school or neighborhood is right for them. What I can do is show you where the state's official data lives and how to read it, so you can draw your own conclusions. Everything below comes from the Virginia School Quality Profiles site and the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE).
What the School Quality Profiles are
The profiles cover student achievement, college and career readiness, program completion, school safety, teacher quality and other topics, with report cards for schools, school divisions and the commonwealth as a whole (School Quality Profiles). The state's division list shows 133 school divisions (Browse by Division).
Around Fredericksburg, five divisions cover most of the homes buyers look at, on both sides of the Rappahannock:
- Fredericksburg City Public Schools
- Stafford County Public Schools
- Spotsylvania County Public Schools
- King George County Public Schools
- Caroline County Public Schools
A home's county or city decides its division. A home with a Fredericksburg mailing address can sit in Stafford or Spotsylvania, so check the jurisdiction first.
How to find a school or division
From the home page you can search by school or division name, by city or ZIP code, or by House of Delegates or State Senate district. You can also browse the state report, all divisions or all schools (School Quality Profiles).
One caution matters for buyers. The division pages note that map results may not reflect school division or attendance zone boundaries (Fredericksburg City profile). A ZIP code search is a starting point. It does not tell you which school serves a specific home.
The tabs, one by one
A division profile opens with general information and a Summary. Tabs then cover state test results, Enrollment, College and Career Readiness, Finance, School Environment, Teacher Quality, ESSA (federal reporting) and Early Learning (Fredericksburg City profile). In brief:
- Summary: each school's accreditation status, performance level and framework score.
- Test results: Standards of Learning (SOL) results by subject, with filters for student groups.
- College and Career Readiness: diplomas, graduation, advanced programs, industry credentials and postsecondary enrollment (SQP FAQs).
- Teacher Quality: student-teacher ratios, teacher credentials and classes taught by teachers not fully certified in the subject (SQP FAQs).
Under each chart, a "Show Explanation" button adds context, and you can compare a school with division and state figures or view the data behind a chart (SQP FAQs).
Performance categories and framework scores
The score and category come from Virginia's School Performance and Support Framework (SPSF). It weighs up to four components: Mastery, Growth, Readiness and Graduation. Growth applies only to elementary and middle schools, and Graduation only to high schools (VDOE SPSF overview). The overall score places each school in one of four categories:
- Distinguished: 90 or more points (VDOE)
- Meets Expectations (formerly On Track): 80 to 89 points (VDOE)
- Approaching Expectations (formerly Off Track): 65 to 79 points (VDOE)
- Needs Intensive Support: below 65 points (VDOE)
Two details trip people up. First, the category names changed, so older articles and screenshots may use On Track and Off Track. Second, a school's category can be lowered by one level if one group of students in that school is struggling, so a score and a label won't always line up the way you'd expect (VDOE SPSF overview).
The latest results are the Fall 2026 release, covering the 2025-2026 school year for more than 1,800 schools (VDOE Fall 2026 results).
Accreditation is a separate question
Accreditation shows whether a school meets the state's standards to operate. VDOE uses Fully Accredited and Conditionally Accredited, plus Accreditation Denied, New School and Accreditation Withheld (VDOE accreditation). In the Fall 2026 release, VDOE reported that 99% of schools were fully accredited (VDOE Fall 2026 results). So accreditation and the performance category answer different questions.
Before you rely on the data for a home
- Confirm which division serves the address, especially near the city and county lines along Route 3 and Route 1.
- Check the specific school assignment with the division, not with a ZIP search or a listing field. My guides to how Stafford attendance zones are set and changed and enrolling in Spotsylvania schools after a move show where to look.
- Read several tabs and years together, then ask the school or division your questions directly.

FAQ
Where do I find official data on Virginia public schools?
Use the Virginia School Quality Profiles site from VDOE. It has free report cards for every public school, every division and the state, searchable by name, city or ZIP code (School Quality Profiles).
What do the performance categories on a school profile mean?
They come from Virginia's School Performance and Support Framework: Distinguished at 90 or more points, Meets Expectations at 80 to 89, Approaching Expectations at 65 to 79 and Needs Intensive Support below 65 (VDOE SPSF overview).
Is accreditation the same as the performance category?
No. Accreditation shows whether a school meets the state's standards to operate, such as staffing, facilities and required programs, while the performance category reflects the framework score (VDOE accreditation).
Does the School Quality Profiles map show which school serves a home?
No. The profile pages say map results may not reflect school division or attendance zone boundaries, so confirm a home's assigned school directly with the school division (Fredericksburg City profile).
