Germanna Community College and UMW: Higher Education Near Fredericksburg
Quick answer: The Fredericksburg area has two public colleges with several sites. Germanna Community College runs its Fredericksburg Area Campus and a Stafford County Center, plus campuses farther west. The University of Mary Washington has its main Fredericksburg campus, a Stafford campus and a Dahlgren campus in King George. Germanna graduates can transfer to UMW under a guaranteed admission agreement.
If you're moving here and plan to take classes, go back to school or look into college credit during high school, it helps to know where the campuses are and how the two schools connect. This guide sticks to the facts each school publishes. Always confirm details with the admissions office before you plan around them.
Germanna Community College locations
Germanna lists five locations: the Fredericksburg Area Campus, the Locust Grove Campus, the Daniel Technology Center in Culpeper, Oberle Academy in Fredericksburg and the Stafford County Center (Germanna). In-person services at the Fredericksburg Area Campus, Locust Grove and Stafford run 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays, per the same page.
The Stafford County Center is the newer site. Germanna describes it as a 74,000-square-foot center with full student support services, a welcome center for help with applications and registration, health sciences space and morning and evening classes (Germanna). For Stafford residents, it's a closer option than driving south across the Rappahannock.
What Germanna costs
For 2026-27, Germanna lists in-state tuition and fees of $186.90 per credit ($177.65 tuition plus $9.25 in fees). The out-of-state rate is $404.00 per credit (Germanna). That gap is why the in-state rules below matter so much if you've just moved here.
Dual enrollment for high school students
Germanna offers dual enrollment so high school and home-schooled students can earn college credit before they graduate. Classes can be taken at the high school during the school day or directly through Germanna, and a grade of C or higher is required to receive transfer credit (Germanna). Germanna says some of these classes are offered at no cost and others at reduced tuition, so ask the high school counselor which apply.
University of Mary Washington campuses
UMW's main campus is in Fredericksburg. Its visitor page says the campus is 50 miles south of Washington, D.C., and 50 miles north of Richmond, and it's reached from I-95 by way of Route 3 and Route 1 (UMW). The same page notes that UMW students and employees ride the FRED bus system free with a UMW ID.
The UMW catalog lists two more campuses. The Stafford campus sits on a wooded 48-acre site seven miles north of the Fredericksburg campus. A third campus in King George is near Dahlgren and supports the education and professional development of the region's engineers, scientists and professionals (UMW Catalog). The Dahlgren campus lists business hours of 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, and offers both live classes and distance learning by video teleconferencing (UMW Dahlgren).
UMW also owns two historic sites, including Gari Melchers Home and Studio at Belmont overlooking the Rappahannock River and the James Monroe Museum in Fredericksburg (UMW Catalog).
Germanna to UMW: the transfer path
UMW's Guaranteed Admission Agreement covers students who graduate from the Virginia Community College System with an associate degree in arts and/or sciences and a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0. UMW notes that some programs are competitive and may require separate acceptance (UMW).
Germanna's UMW transfer page adds details. Completing the AA, AA&S or AS transfer degree satisfies UMW's general education requirements except the second language, and Germanna students who plan to finish at UMW can take up to 5 classes at UMW after completing 15 Germanna credits with a 3.0 GPA (Germanna).
In-state tuition after you move
Buying a home here doesn't by itself make you eligible for in-state tuition. Under Virginia law, a student generally must show by clear and convincing evidence at least one year of domicile in Virginia, plus abandonment of any previous domicile. Schools look at factors such as continuous residence, where income taxes are filed, driver's license, vehicle and voter registration, employment and property ownership (Code of Virginia). If timing matters, start the clock early and keep your records.
