Garrisonville Road in Stafford: Commuter Lots, Errands and Peak Traffic Tips
Quick answer: Garrisonville Road is north Stafford's main east-west road, meeting I-95 at the Aquia/Garrisonville interchange. Commuters use two nearby commuter lots for OmniRide buses and slug lines, while Stafford Market Place handles daily errands. Plan around weekday rush hours, check the state's traffic service before you leave, and watch for planned county intersection work.
If you're house hunting in north Stafford, or getting ready to sell there, Garrisonville Road probably shapes your day more than any other road. Here's how the commuter lots, buses, Express Lanes and planned road projects fit together, using transit agency, VDOT and county sources.
Where Garrisonville Road fits
Garrisonville Road is Route 610. It meets I-95 at Exit 143, which VDOT calls the Aquia/Garrisonville interchange (VDOT). East of the interstate you're close to U.S. 1 and Aquia. Heading west, the road runs past shopping centers and neighborhoods toward Eustace Road and Shelton Shop Road.
Stafford County's planning study for the corridor covers the stretch between Stafford Market Place/Salisbury Drive and Eustace Road (Stafford County). That's the part most people mean when they say they shop or commute "on Garrisonville."
The two Route 610 commuter lots
GWRideConnect, the regional rideshare program, lists two Stafford lots tied to Route 610 (GWRideConnect):
- The Staffordboro (North) Commuter Lot, on Staffordboro Boulevard (GWRideConnect).
- The Mine Road (South) Commuter Lot, off Salisbury Drive (GWRideConnect).
OmniRide lists the Staffordboro/Route 610 lot with 1,865 spaces, slug lines and service from routes 942 and 943. It also notes there are no bike amenities (OmniRide). For a second option, the Route 630 lot on Courthouse Road has 1,100 spaces and bike amenities, and route 541 to Washington serves it (OmniRide).
Overnight parking is allowed at the region's park-and-ride lots. Vehicles left more than 10 consecutive days are towed at the owner's expense (GWRideConnect).
Buses and slugging to the Pentagon
OmniRide's Stafford-Pentagon timetable runs weekday morning trips from the Route 610 Staffordboro lot between 4:20 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. Afternoon and evening trips leave the Pentagon between 12:50 p.m. and 7:05 p.m. (OmniRide). Times are approximate and depend on traffic and weather, so check the current schedule before your first ride.
Bring a SmarTrip card or app, because OmniRide doesn't accept cash. The printed 942 schedule lists a regular one-way fare of $11.00 (OmniRide 942 schedule).
Slugging is the other habit north Stafford commuters build their mornings around. OmniRide marks the Staffordboro lot as having slug lines (OmniRide). If you plan to slug, visit the lot on a weekday morning before you buy so you know where the lines form.
The 95 Express Lanes near Garrisonville
The 95 Express Lanes Fredericksburg Extension added about 10 miles of reversible toll lanes, from south of Route 610 to the Route 17 area at Exit 133. The lanes opened on Aug. 17, 2023, and new access points opened on Dec. 7, 2023, including access at the Route 630 (Courthouse Road) interchange (VDOT).
For a north Stafford driver, that means more ways to get into the Express Lanes than just Exit 143. If you compare drive and train options, my Fredericksburg to DC commute guide breaks down the VRE and the Express Lanes side by side.
Errands and road projects to know
Stafford Market Place, at the eastern end of the county's study area, is the corridor's main shopping stop (Stafford County). The county's study is looking for cost-effective safety and congestion fixes on the corridor, and its recommendations are meant to support a 2026 SMART SCALE grant application.
Garrisonville Road at Shelton Shop Road. An earlier plan to widen the road from four to six lanes is being rescoped because of rising costs. The current plan adds left-turn lanes in both directions at Shelton Shop Road, plus sidewalks and crosswalks where there are gaps. Design is at 30%, and the county says there's no construction schedule yet because full funding hasn't been received. The total cost is listed at $25,133,106 (Stafford County).
Phase 2 widening. A separate county project would widen Garrisonville Road to six lanes between Parkway Boulevard and Shelton Shop Road, with sidewalks on both sides. The county says it hasn't started engineering, and its cost estimate is $39,665,430 (Stafford County).
Peak traffic tips
- Check 511 before you leave. VDOT points drivers to 511 Virginia for traffic, incidents, work zones and cameras, and posts a weekly Fredericksburg-area lane closure list on Friday afternoons (VDOT).
- Know your backup interchange. When Exit 143 ramps close for overnight work, VDOT has pointed drivers to Exit 140 (Courthouse Road) (VDOT).
- Test-drive at rush hour. Before you buy, drive from the house to the commuter lot and to Stafford Market Place on a weekday morning and evening.
If you also commute to the base, my Quantico commute guide covers the gate routes.
