Stafford Parks and Trails Guide: Crow's Nest, Government Island and More

by Ron Chronister

Quick answer: Stafford's two signature nature spots are Crow's Nest Natural Area Preserve, with more than 9 miles of trails from its Raven Road access, and Government Island, a historic sandstone quarry reached by a boardwalk off Aquia Creek. County parks add a Potomac beach at Aquia Landing and longer trails at Curtis Memorial Park (Virginia DCR).

Stafford County runs from the Rappahannock at Falmouth up to Aquia Creek and the Potomac, so its parks range from river overlooks to tidal marsh. This guide sticks to what the state and county post about each place: access points, hours, trail lengths and a few rules worth knowing before you go. Check each page before a visit, because closures do change.

Crow's Nest Natural Area Preserve

Crow's Nest is a state natural area preserve on a peninsula between Potomac Creek and Accokeek Creek. DCR lists it at 3,344 acres and owned by Stafford County, DCR and the Northern Virginia Conservation Trust (Virginia DCR). Its narrow ridgeline rises 160 feet above the two tidal creeks, and its wetlands account for 60 percent of all the marshes in Stafford County (Virginia DCR).

There are two ways in (Virginia DCR):

  • Raven Road Access: an 18-car lot and more than 9 miles of hiking trails in the forested interior, reached by a 1.6-mile entrance road. It's open Thursday through Sunday (Virginia DCR).
  • Brooke Road Access: parking for 20 cars, a shoreline birding trail with views of Accokeek Creek and an accessible canoe and kayak launch for the Crow's Nest Water Trail. It's normally open 7 days a week (Virginia DCR).
  • Hours: 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM from March 15 to October 31, and 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM from November 1 to March 14 (Virginia DCR).

As of this writing, DCR's page says the Brooke Road canoe launch lot closed starting October 15 for boardwalk renovations and stays closed until further notice, with an estimate of two to three weeks (Virginia DCR). DCR also asks visitors to park only in marked spaces and come back later if the lots are full.

To get there, DCR's directions start at I-95 exit 140 and follow Route 630 (Courthouse Road) east past U.S. 1, then go through the community of Brooke to Brooke Road (Virginia DCR).

Government Island

Government Island is the quarry that supplied Aquia sandstone for the White House and the U.S. Capitol. The county park has a 1-mile hiking and walking trail and an elevated boardwalk through wetlands and woods to the island, and fishing isn't permitted from the island (Stafford County).

The Virginia Department of Historic Resources says the 17-acre island in Aquia Creek holds five known quarry sites. Charles L'Enfant bought it for the federal government in 1791, and quarrying stopped in the 1820s (Virginia DHR). It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007 (Virginia DHR).

More Stafford County parks with trails or water

The county's parks directory lists every site. A few that stand out for trails and water:

Park What the county lists
Aquia Landing Park Nearly a quarter-mile of recreational beach on the Potomac River, 15 miles east of the Stafford County Courthouse on Brooke Road (Stafford County)
Belmont Ferry Farm Trail 2.5 miles of paved multi-use trail, with entrances at the Historic Port of Falmouth, John Lee Pratt Memorial Park and St. Clair Brooks Memorial Park (Stafford County)
Duff McDuff Green Memorial Park A 2.2-mile hiking trail, a scenic river overlook and 3 dog parks (Stafford County)
Curtis Memorial Park 5.5 miles of hiking trails, a boat ramp, a fishing pier and an 18-hole disc golf course (Stafford County)
Lake Mooney Park A 520-acre lake with a boat ramp (electric motors only), a canoe launch and a 2.09-mile trail (Stafford County)
Stafford Civil War Park 41 acres with eight tour stops tied to the Union Army's 11th Corps after the December 1862 Battle of Fredericksburg, plus 1.45 miles of trails (Stafford County)

A Virginia fishing license is required at Lake Mooney (Stafford County).

How parks fit a Stafford home search

Where a park sits relative to your daily routes matters more than its size. The Belmont Ferry Farm Trail and Duff McDuff Green are on the Falmouth side near Route 3 and the Rappahannock. Crow's Nest, Government Island and Aquia Landing are east of I-95 toward the Potomac. Curtis Memorial Park and Lake Mooney are west of I-95. If you're comparing homes near Embrey Mill, Aquia Harbour or Falmouth, drive to the parks you'd actually use at the time you'd use them. My Aquia Harbour guide covers that corner of the county, and my Woodbridge parks guide covers the next stretch of the Potomac to the north.
