Dahlgren School on NSWC Dahlgren: DoDEA Eligibility Facts

by Ron Chronister

Quick answer: Dahlgren School is the Department of Defense school on the Dahlgren installation in King George County, serving pre-K through grade 8 (Dahlgren School). Tuition-free enrollment generally depends on the sponsor's job status and living in permanent on-base quarters. If you buy a home off base, plan on enrolling in King George County Schools.

That last point matters if you're deciding between on-base housing and buying in King George. Below are the eligibility rules as DoDEA publishes them, plus the steps for the county schools. This is process only; always confirm your own case with the school registrar.

What Dahlgren School is

Dahlgren School is part of the Americas Mid-Atlantic District and serves pre-kindergarten through grade 8 (Dahlgren School). The agency's websites now use the name Department of War Education Activity (DoWEA), while the school site is still titled DoDEA (Dahlgren School). Student hours are 8:25 a.m. to 3:10 p.m. (Dahlgren School).

The school is inside Naval Support Facility Dahlgren, whose Main Gate sits at the end of Route 206 near Route 301. My Dahlgren area guide covers the roads and gates.

Who can enroll tuition-free

DoDEA says eligibility comes from 10 U.S.C. § 2164 and DoDEA Administrative Instruction 1344.01 (Dahlgren School registration). In the contiguous U.S., students are eligible tuition-free if they are dependents of:

  1. Active-duty members, including reservists and National Guard members activated under Title 10, living in permanent quarters on the installation (registration).
  2. Full-time DoW civilian employees living in permanent quarters on the installation (registration).
  3. A member of the Armed Forces who died in the line of duty in a combat-related operation (registration).
  4. Members of foreign armed forces living in permanent quarters on an installation served by the school (registration).

Three limits stand out. Living on the installation alone doesn't guarantee eligibility; the sponsor must also meet the criteria. DoW contractors aren't eligible. And the schools can't accept tuition payments from individuals (registration).

What buying off base means

If you buy a home in King George instead of living in on-base quarters, the standard rule no longer fits. There is one narrower path: the Expanded Eligibility Enrollment option, which Congress authorized in the 2025 National Defense Authorization Act (DoWEA). Key facts from DoDEA:

  • It is only for dependents of full-time, active-duty service members with orders to Dahlgren, and only if space is available (DoWEA).
  • DoW civilian employees who live off base are not eligible for this option (DoWEA).
  • Returning students come first, then siblings of enrolled students (DoWEA).
  • The application opens April 1, and applications for the current school year are no longer available after October 31 (DoWEA).
  • You reapply every year, and acceptance one year doesn't guarantee the next (DoWEA).
  • No school transportation is provided for students living off the installation (DoWEA).

DoDEA's own advice is that applying doesn't guarantee a seat, so parents should still enroll in the local school available to them (DoWEA).

Documents Dahlgren School asks for

New students must verify date of birth, dependent status, the sponsor's active-duty or civilian employment status and an on-base housing assignment (registration). Housing can be shown with a housing assignment letter or lease, or a housing office letter saying quarters will be offered within 90 school days (registration). Returning students re-verify sponsor status and housing each year (registration).

If you buy in King George: county school steps

King George County Schools requires students and their parents or guardians to be bona fide residents who live and sleep in the county (KGCS). For buyers, note that a ratified sales agreement, a deed or a mortgage statement counts as a primary residency document. You'll also need a secondary document, such as a current utility bill or homeowner's insurance (KGCS).

Registration starts online, then the division schedules an in-person appointment, which may be several weeks out (KGCS). Age cutoffs differ too: KGCS kindergarten requires turning 5 by September 30, while Dahlgren School uses September 1 (KGCS; registration).

Planning your move around a closing

  • Ask the registrar first. Confirm eligibility before you choose between on-base quarters and buying.
  • Time the contract. Because a ratified sales agreement counts for KGCS residency, you can start county registration before closing (KGCS).
  • Map the drive. If you're comparing King George with Fredericksburg, my Route 3 commuter guide covers the corridor. Moving to Spotsylvania instead? See my Spotsylvania enrollment guide.
