Bowling Green and Ladysmith: Errands, Parks and Daily Life in Caroline

by Ron Chronister

Quick answer: Bowling Green is Caroline County's county seat, where Route 301, Route 207 and Route 2 meet, about 20 miles southeast of Fredericksburg (Town of Bowling Green). Ladysmith sits on the I-95 side at Exit 110. Day to day, both rely on county parks, library branches and county trash and recycling sites.

If you're looking at homes in central Caroline County, the commute is only part of the picture. You'll also want to know where the town offices are, how trash works, which library branch is closest and where to get outside. Here's what the Town of Bowling Green, Caroline County and the county library publish.

Bowling Green: the county seat

The town describes itself as the county seat, located in the center of Caroline County at the intersection of Route 301, Route 207 and Route 2, and 11 miles due east of Exit 104 on I-95 (Town of Bowling Green). Government offices and courts for both the county and the town are downtown, and the town police department serves about 1,100 people (Bowling Green Police).

A few practical details:

  • Town Hall is open Monday through Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Town Council meets the 1st Thursday of the month at 6 p.m., and the Planning Commission meets the 3rd Thursday at 6 p.m. (Town FAQ).
  • Streets and sidewalks in town are maintained by VDOT, and the town issues golf cart permits through its own forms (Town FAQ).
  • Public parking is available at the Town Hall lot, on Chase Street and on Courthouse Lane (Town of Bowling Green).

Water, sewer and the town line

Utilities depend on exactly where a home sits. The town runs its own water and sewer system, and new builds or new connections must first submit a Water and Sewer Availability and Connection Application with fees (Town of Bowling Green). Caroline County lists separate water and sewer contacts for the Carmel Church area, the Milford area, Lake Caroline, Lake Land'Or, the Town of Bowling Green and the Town of Port Royal (Caroline County). Outside those service areas, ask whether the home uses a private well and septic, and inspect accordingly.

Ladysmith: the I-95 side of the county

VDOT identifies Exit 110 as Ladysmith and points drivers to Route 1 and Route 301/Route 207 as alternates when I-95 closes (VDOT). My Caroline County to Richmond commute guide covers the drive in detail.

For daily errands, the county library's Ladysmith Branch is open Monday through Thursday 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Note that its street address uses Ruther Glen (Caroline County Library). If you're also considering a lake community nearby, see my Lake Caroline community guide.

Errands: trash, recycling and the library

Caroline County runs convenience sites where residents can drop off trash and recycling. All sites are open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. They're closed Wednesdays, Easter Sunday, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day (Caroline County).

The county lists 7 sites, including Bowling Green (at the front of the old sanitary landfill), Ladysmith, the Animal Shelter site, Dawn, Corbin, Sparta and Port Royal (Caroline County). Read the county's operating manual before your first trip.

The library's Bowling Green Branch has a Milford address and is open Monday and Tuesday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Wednesday 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday and Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. (Caroline County Library).

Parks and walking trails

Caroline County Parks and Recreation lists 3 county parks: Caroline Recreation Park, Lowe-Massie Park and Robert Farmer Park. Rentals are $20 per 5-hour block (Caroline County Parks).

The county's tourism page adds the Bowling Green Walkabout along Main Street, the Caroline County Skate Board Park in Milford, the Caroline Woodland Trail in Ruther Glen and Robert Farmer Park in Bowling Green (Caroline County). Parks and Recreation takes online registration for most activities, with a service charge, and its office is open weekdays 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Parks & Recreation).

Town events through the year

The 2026 Bowling Green Holiday Parade, themed "The Nutcracker: A Christmas Parade Fantasy," steps off on Main Street at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 12, 2026. The rain date is Sunday, Dec. 13 (Town of Bowling Green). The town also points residents to its Harvest Festival, Farmers Market, Music on the Green, spring and fall Clean Sweep and leaf pickup.
